Vals, Tyrol

Vals is a municipality with 549 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Innsbruck Land, Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Innsbruck.

Geography

Location

Vals comprises six kilometers long, Valsertal getting together at St. Jodok with the Schmirntal and flows Stafflach in the Wipptal. Also at Vals counts Padaun.

The municipality extends to the Tux Main Ridge at a height of about 3000 m. In the southeast of the community at the same time forms the border to South Tyrol (Italy).

The valley is drained by the Vals stream which receives in St. Jodok the Schmirnbach and flows Stafflach in the Sill.

Capital is St. Jodok, but whose eponymous northern half belongs to the municipality Schmirn. At St. Jodok the Brenner railway wins with a loop height.

Neighboring communities

History

The first written mention is in 1313 as " Valles ". The name is derived from vallis (Latin for valley ), as the area was once used by Roman -speaking farmers of the Wipptal as pasture area.

In the Middle Ages was mined in the Vals valley marble, among other things, come the bottoms of the Hofburg in Innsbruck and the Innsbruck Cathedral from here.

1942, the entire valley was declared a nature reserve in 2001 was a re-enactment of 35.19 km ² of the rear Valser as a Natura 2000 site.

In the era of National Socialism prisoners of war and forced laborers for the planned reduction of molybdenum up to 2950 m above sea level near the notch Alpeiner were used in Vals and many died there. These forced labor camps were built there. The mining of molybdenum did not succeed.

Policy

The last mayor elections took place simultaneously with the local elections on March 14, 2010.

Klaus Ungerank was elected mayor and Alois Schmölzer Vice Mayor.

Coat of arms

Blazon: In a fallen red half black lace with a golden crown.

The coat of arms consists of a V, symbolizing the structure of the valley and the crown of the holy Jodok.
