The Valtenberg ( Upper Sorbian Sokolnik ) is 586.6 m above sea level with. Sea level, the highest elevation of the Lusatian lands in Upper Lusatia in Saxony.

Origin of the name

Even in the 18th century, the name Falkenberg was usual, from this arose the still valid name Valtenberg. At the root word falcon and the Upper Sorbian name Sokolnik points ( Sokol = hawk).

Geographical location

The Valtenberg is located about 2.5 km southwest of the community Neukirch and 5 kilometers north of Neustadt in Sachsen. The southern slope of the mountain is called Hohwald. There is located directly on the border with the Czech Republic Hohwaldklinik. On the southern slope of the mountain is located in an old mining tunnel the source of Wesenitz which opens at Pirna the Elbe. The summit and the north-west side of the mountain consists of Zweiglimmergranodiorit while on foot granodiorite is found.

History

1752-1762 was located on the southern slope of the Valentin- Erbstolln at Falck mountains, where a quartz vein has been the subject of a mining experiment. The verrollte tunnel mouth hole is now regarded as a source of Wesenitz.

In 1857 the still existing stone lookout tower, designed by Carl August Schramm is inaugurated after 150 Bautagen on July 1. After a fire in 1859, the pre-existing wooden mountain economy is destroyed by arson, and differs little later a stone. The tower was named after King John of Saxony.

When station No. 6 Valtenberg the summit was in 1864 a station first order of the Royal Saxon triangulation. For this reason, a survey column was erected on the observation tower, which still exists today. In 1865, the first visit by King John.

The private water supply in 1938 was sought by the first well bore. The mountain guest house burned in 1951 again, but was rebuilt later. The restaurant located today " Bergbaude Valtenberg " was opened in 1977. There is an annual Ascension and Pentecost on the Valtenberg. In 2007, the 150th anniversary of King John's Tower was celebrated.

From the 25 m high tower of King John's views on the Upper Lusatian region extends to the Zittau mountain range and even into the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and the crest of the Ore Mountains. For distance vision and the crest of Jizera and Giant Mountains are visible.

Way to the summit

  • About the Mountain performs a variety of hiking trails, mountain trail is known Oberlausitzer which exceeds all major Lusatian mountains.
  • As a starting point for the shortest rise of Neukirch Westbahnhof can serve, from there, the path leads through a green marked trail to the summit.
  • The Hohwaldschänke state road Neustadt- Steinigtwolmsdorf is a good starting point for an ascent of the mountain. From there you follow a marked path with blue signposts.
