History

Formerly called the Bimbachen Village Amoco. The present name Valverde (Spanish: Green valley ) Although true at least in the spring, but perhaps the first Spanish settlers renamed the place for reasons of memory of their home, because in Spain there are several places of this name. La Villa, which means something like small town Herreños call their city. It was the end of the 15th century seat of the count's steward. Although there was also an upscale segment of the population from the political, church and military, but they were few, and so continue certain grazing rural life. In July 1899 a major fire destroyed the town hall of Valverde and therein island archive, which has been conducted since 1553. So the island were taken from important documents, and made them largely ahistorical.

In the municipal coat of arms is, as in the island of Arms, the historic and important for the population today Garoé tree immortalized. This tree also donated in times of drought or water.

Cityscape

In the still rather rural capital of El Hierro can be found, although mostly along the two main roads, the most important buildings such as the town hall and court, hospital and supermarkets, a school and other educational institutions, music schools and places where there are theaters and concerts, but characterize the town more vegetable gardens, chickens and goats. The place itself, at about 600 meters above sea level, is the only capital of the Canary Islands, which has no direct access to the sea and therefore does not have its own port. The site extends over the slopes of four mountain peaks and consists of the lower district of El Cabo, downtown La Calle and the upper town Tesine. Valverde is the transportation hub between the port and airport.

Climate

Valverde can radiate a typical Mediterranean atmosphere, when the warm sun once openly appears from the sky. Often, however, depends dense fog Passat (called bruma ) above the already high city and forms a cool, damp gray veil under which it can also be stormy. The place can be transformed in just a few moments in an inhospitable place. A few vertical meters below can be very different but the weather already.

Attractions

  • The three-nave church of the main island, Santa María de la Concepción in the 18th century. Your foundation walls date back to the mid-16th century. She formerly served as a refuge from pirate attacks. To Bajada 1999, the largest island feast in honor of the Virgen de los Reyes, she and the opposite rectory were restored. Inside it has a Canarian wooden ceiling in Mudejar style. On the Baroque altar is the statue of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción.
