Valwig

Valwig is a wine village on the Moselle River in Cochem- Zell, in Rhineland -Palatinate. The municipality belongs to the municipality of Cochem. Valwig is a nationally recognized tourist.

Geography

Geographical location

The village lies on the right bank of the Moselle ( river kilometer 55). The county town of Cochem is about three kilometers away.

Geology

The Moselle valley is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains and is characterized by steep slopes and zerkluftete.

History

In the first documents Valwig is called " Falavoia " " (866 AD), " Falaveia " ( 893 AD) and" Valefayer " (1130 AD) mentioned. One assumes, however, that Valwig was already inhabited by Celts and Romans. therefore thus saith the Celto -Roman label " Balbiacum ", which translates as "settlement of Balbius " means. Valwig one of the oldest Mosel places. with the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine in 1794 by French revolutionary troops ended the centuries- long rule Kurtriers. place 1815 the Congress of Vienna was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia. since 1946 it has been part of Rhineland- Palatinate then newly founded.

Culture and sights

Parish Church of St Martin

The parish church until 1827 by Johann Claudius, built between 1823 Lassaulx of the towers over the district of Valwig, is considered the first neo-Romanesque church in Germany.

Pilgrimage Church of St. Mary Magdalene and

The construction of the small chapel on the Valwigerberg goes back to the mid 15th century. After the accumulation of reports of answered prayers, it was built by the Knights of Johann Winneburg to honor the " miraculous image of Our Lady of the Mountains".

Trails

Along the vineyards of Valwig, where Riesling is grown, extend two well-known hiking trails. Mosel down towards Cochem runs the 7.5 -kilometer Apolloweg Valwig. It was created by the community Valwig among others with funds from the European LEADER II program. Recently, also the approximately 4.4 kilometers long leads BREVA way upriver to the hamlet Valwigerberg and the neighboring village of Bruttig -Fankel.
