Van Buren County (Iowa)

The Van Buren County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 7,570 inhabitants and a population density of 6 people per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Keosauqua, named after an Indian expression.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme southeast of Iowa and is drained by the Des Moines River. It is bordered to the south by Missouri and has an area of 1,271 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Van Buren County was formed on December 7, 1836 from former parts of Des Moines County. It was named for Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), the eighth President of the United States ( 1837-1841 ).

1837 the first meeting of the County Comissionars took place in Farmington. In December of the same year, the Legislative Assembly of the Wisconsin Territory decided to move the seat of the administration to Rochester. This was prevented by a veto of the Governor. 1838 was finally determined by a voting decision Keosauqua as County Seat.

The judicial and administrative building was completed in 1843 and is the oldest in all of Iowa and the second oldest in the country.
