Vandalia is a city and county seat of Fayette County in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2000, Vandalia had 6,975 inhabitants; until the official 2009 estimate, the population dropped to 6,295.

Geography

Vandalia is located on the west bank of the Kaskaskia River at 38 ° 58'05 " north latitude and 89 ° 06'07 " west longitude and extending over 14.66 km ², which consist exclusively of land area.

History

Vandalia is the second oldest surviving former state capital of Illinois ( 1819-1839 ). Towards the end of 1834 began Abraham Lincoln, who later became the 16th President of the United States, his career as a lawyer in Vandalia.
