VanDusen Botanical Garden

The VanDusen Botanical Garden is a 22 acre botanical garden in the Canadian city of Vancouver. It is located in the district of Shaughnessy at the corner of West 37th Avenue / Oak Street, is managed by the Municipal Park Authority and maintained by volunteers.

The area originally belonged to the Canadian Pacific Railway ( CPR) and in 1911 was leased to the Shaughnessy Golf Club. 1960, the course was moved to another location and the CPR was planning the construction of residential areas, but this has met with resistance. Signed in 1970, the Vancouver Foundation, the provincial government and the city council an agreement. Funded by a donation by WJ VanDusen, after the garden is named, in 1971 began the transformation into a botanical garden. The opening took place on 30 August 1975.

Early on, they had agreed not to engage in scientific research, but purely to limit themselves to the plant care. For this reason, the VanDusen Botanical Garden has no research facilities or herbaria. However, there is a specialized reference library in the administration building. On the site there are carved totem poles, large stone sculptures and a Korean Pavilion, which is the center of the Asian Department. In the garden, among other numerous rhododendrons, beech trees, berry bushes flour, ash, magnolia, heather bushes and holly trees.
