Vanessa Fernandes

Vanessa de Sousa Fernandes ( born 14 September 1985 in Perosinho, Vila Nova de Gaia) is a Portuguese triathlete and cyclist.

Sports career

Vanessa Fernandes took part in a triathlon for the first time in 1999. She joined the club Belenenses Lisbon and was already after three years celebrate their first international successes. Since 2005 she is a member of the sports club Benfica. Fernandes has been one European Junior Champion (2002), three times European U23 champion (2004, 2005 and 2006) and five consecutive European Champion of the Elite category (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008) over the Olympic distance (1.5 km swim, 40 km cycling, 10 km running). At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, she was eighth and four years later she won the silver medal in Beijing.

2006 Fernandes won the World Cup of the International Triathlon Union and was elected to Portugal's athlete of the year. My biggest success is winning the gold medal at the 2007 World Championships in Hamburg. In addition, Fernandes was once each world and European champion in duathlon.

2010 Vanessa Fernandes twofold Portuguese cycling champion, in the road race as in the individual time trial. Her father is the former racing driver Venceslau Fernandes, winner of the Tour of Portugal in 1984.
