Vangaži

Vangaži ( German: Wangasch ) is a city in north-central Latvia.

History

The place name is a combination of two words Livonian vang (field) and Azi (square). Vangaži is called for the first time in the 17th century as the name of a basic rule. Since the 17th century there was a monastery here. In the 19th century, some factories emerged, particularly for the production of paper, glass and copper device.

1955 discovered large sand and gravel deposits. The workers' settlement 'October' 1961 part of Vangaži. 1957 saw the establishment of a concrete plant. 1991 got Vangaži awarded city rights.

Sports

1968-1991 Vangaži had a relatively strong football club, first called Celtnieks Vangaži, then renamed in concrete Vangaži. This even played in the 1989-1991 Virsliga, the highest football league in Latvia.
