The Vanil Noir ( Freiburg Patois Vani - Né? / I ) is 2,389 meters above sea level. M. the highest mountain peaks of the Fribourg Pre-Alps in Switzerland. About the ridge is the boundary between the cantons of Fribourg and Vaud. The name Vanil is an expression of Canton Fribourg's patois, means as much as rock, rocky peaks and initially reported by the Gallic word vanno ( slope, peak ) back.

Location

The mountain chain of the Vanil Noir is bounded on the south by the Pays -d'Enhaut, in the west of the Upper Gruyère, in the north by Jaunbachtal and on the east by the high valley Grosmont. From the highest point of the Vanil Noir, a grassy summit, running three narrow and partly rocky mountain ridges of: the first, respectively, to the north north-east, which leads on to the peaks of the Dent de Folliéran and Dent de Brenleire, the second east to Tour de Dorénaz ( 2,260 m above sea level. Geology

In geological terms, the area of the Vanil Noir is one of the Préalpes Romandes, a large-scale shear mass penninischer sediments deposited as cliff respectively clip blanket on Helvetic sediments. The topography of the area is mainly determined by the rock material. Hard limestone features, which form the landscape features, alternate with marly layers, which are significantly more eroded. The Vanil Noir is part of the competent limestone Préalpes median plastiques. In the region there are also typical karst phenomena, such as karst formations, sinkholes and caves ( including the Chasm of Diablotins ).

Conservation

The area of ​​the Vanil Noir is since 1983 under protection. Today's nature reserve covers an area of around 15 square kilometers with the valleys of Bounavaux and Morteys. In particular, the Vallon des Morteys characterized by rare species of plants from (Alpine Betony, Pyramidal orchid, alpine flax, Alpine head shed and mountain dragon's head ). At the Vanil Noir there is greater Capricorn and Gämsenpopulationen.

Ascent

The Vanil Noir can be achieved either by hiking through the Vallon de Bounavaux or through the Vallon des Morteys; also the bordering north Vallée de Motélon can be taken as the starting point for ascents. The mountain trail on the north ridge of the Vanil Noir, however, has the rock gap of the Pas de Borière on an exposed, difficult and secured with wire cables point that needs to be overcome.
