VARA

VARA is a public- broadcasting company ( Dutch: Publieke Omroep ) in the Netherlands.

The VARA was founded in 1925 as " Vereeniging van Arbeiders Radio Amateurs" (Association of Workers' radio amateurs). In 1957, the name was changed to " Omroepvereniging VARA " and is no longer abbreviation.

At the beginning of VARA was strictly socialist -oriented and had close contacts with the " Sociaal Democratic Arbeiders Partij " ( SDAP ) (until 1941) or to Partij van de Arbeid ( after 1945 ). Many well-known party officials were on the board of VARA. Initially sent the VARA only eight hours of programming a week. Because of dilettantism the abbreviation of the AVRO as " Van Armoe Rammelt Everything " (about: Poverty shakes everything ) mocked.

Chaired by Marcel van Dam (1986-1995), the VARA, however, was radically restructured. The radio division was greatly reduced and new employees got only temporary contracts. 1995 Vera Keur van Dam successor.
