Varaire

The commune is located in the department of Lot Varaire in the Midi-Pyrénées region. The small, 311 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) scoring has been part of the Regional Natural Park of Causses du Quercy. By Varaire leads the GR 65, which largely follows the historical course of the French Road to Santiago Via Podiensis.

Geography and History

Varaire located on the southwestern edge of the Massif Central in the regional natural park of the Causses du Quercy, on the border between the Causse de Limogne and the Quercy Blanc. The nearest town is Cahors, to reach them in a westerly direction through the Causse du Blanc, on the D19 and D22 after about 30 kilometers of road. The next major French cities are Toulouse (87 km ) to the south, Bordeaux (191 km) to the northwest and Montpellier ( 191 km) to the southeast.

In the area of Varaire there are dolmens, which already evidence of human habitation in the Stone Age. The first beginnings of the town date back to a Roman settlement on the Roman road between Bibon ( Cahors ) to Segudunum ( Rodez). The castle in the village was built by the Cardaillac family and supplemented in the first half of the 13th century by a tower and other buildings. The Cardaillac family produced several times the bishop of Cahors. After its destruction during the Hundred Years War Varaire was rebuilt.

In the Middle Ages there were in place two hostels and a hospice. Today there are only a pilgrim hostel (French: Gîte d' étape ) and sparse private quarters. This variant of the pilgrim route continues across the Kalkhochfläche the Causse du Blanc and joined shortly thereafter with the Cele - variant, and then for the last time to touch the Lot valley, Cahors. As a road connecting the route D19 -D22 leads to Cahors.

Sights and culture

The tower and the house of Cardaillac form the core of the village. These buildings are the only visible witnesses of the Middle Ages.
