Văratec Monastery

The monastery Văratec located in the northeast of Romania 40 km from Piatra Neamţ away in Neamţ county.

History

The present church of the Romanian Orthodox nunnery was built in the period 1808-1812 on the site of a small wooden church from the 16th century. Later they built on the Monastery grounds the Assumption Church, St. John the Baptist Church of the Nativity, the transformation of the church and the St. Nicholas Chapel. In contrast to other monasteries around the church is not surrounded by a fortress wall and a compact building complex.

The monastery complex is the tomb of Veronica Micle, Mihai Eminescu 's girlfriend, and a museum with valuable documents are over the Vltava River from the 16th to the 18th century. Around the main church are numerous small individual buildings where the nuns live. In the monastery temporarily lived up to 1000 nuns.

The natural location of the monastery has attracted many writers and poets. In the monastery lived and worked people as Mihai Eminescu, Garabet Ibrăileanu, Gala Galaction and Calis Trat Hogas.
