Varazze

Varazze ( in the Ligurian also Väze ) is a municipality with 13,302 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Italian region of Liguria. Politically Varazze belongs to the province of Savona.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Riviera di Ponente, on a bay, which is bounded by the headlands of Mola and Aspera. The municipality belongs to the Comunità Montana del Giovo and the Beigua Park ( Parco naturale regional del Beigua ). The distance to the provincial capital Savona is about 13 kilometers.

In 2007 Varazze was awarded the Blue Flag, which distinguishes beach towns with particularly high water and beach quality.

According to the Italian classifications for seismic activity Zoagli Zone 4 has been assigned. This means that the municipality is in a seismically inert zone.

Climate

The community Varazze is classified under climate category D, as the number of degree days has a value of 1499. This means that in Italy legally regulated heating season is between November 1 and April 15 for 12 hours per day.

History

First mention experiencing the village in the 10th century under the name Varagine. The village developed in the immediate vicinity of the Roman vertex Ad Navalia, which is listed on the Tabula Peutingeriana.

Due to its importance in shipbuilding is the place of the two cities Savona and Genoa was bitterly contested. Until 1227 Varazze was a fief of Ponzone family. In consequence it was sold an autonomous municipality and 1290 of Malocello to the Republic of Genoa. Through the first Hung the village of the Republic gained control of large tracts of land, including the villages of Celle Ligure and Albisola.

1525 lost Ugo De Moncarda, commander of the fleet of Charles V, in Varazze a naval battle and was captured then. 1798 sparked Napoleon Bonaparte to the Genoese Republic and annexed the entire territory.

After the fall of Napoleon Varazze, as the entire region went, into the possession of the Sardinian kingdom. 1861 Varazze was the Italian Kingdom incorporated.

Varazze is located on State Road 1 ( Strada Statale ) Via Aurelia. In addition, the village is connected with its own feeder road with the A10 motorway.

Varazze has a railway station on the Genoa- Ventimiglia and is used by regional trains of section Savona - Genoa operated.
