Varenna

Varenna is a municipality with 786 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the Italian region of Lombardy in the province of Lecco.

Geography

The village is situated on a rocky promontory at the foot of the Sasso di San Defendente on the eastern shore of Lake Como at the mouth of the river esino. It has a small old fishing harbor.

History

The name first appears in Varenna 493 on in the history of the city of Milan. The deacon Grato Monza mentioned the fishing village in a charter of 769

He was allied at the time of municipalities with Milan was destroyed in 1126 by the antiwar Como. In 1169 it granted the survivors of the island Comacina asylum, which was destroyed, including the castle and churches of Como. The quarters, where they settled, they gave the name Insula nova. Traffic

Varenna is located on the railway line from Milan to Sondrio and Tirano in Valtellina or to Chiavenna.

A car ferry connects Varenna Menaggio Cadenabbia and on the west bank as well as Bellagio. There are also ferry connections to various other towns on the lake.

Attractions

Worth seeing is the church of San Giorgio are from the year 1313, with its high bell tower, the promenade, the fort Vezio and the Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi.

Since 1954, the Enrico Fermi Summer School of the Italian Physical Society will be held at Villa Monastero annually.
