Varensell Abbey

The Abbey Varensell at Rietberg in the Gütersloh is a Benedictine monastery in the archdiocese of Paderborn. The abbey belongs to the Beuronese Congregation.

History

Varensell was founded in 1902 as a priory of Benedictine Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. The first sisters came from the monastery of Maria Hamicolt at Dülmen. In 1948 Varensell was an abbey and no longer has been one of the Benedictines of the Blessed Sacrament. From the beginning, there was a close relationship between the Convention and parish, which is also expressed in a common use of the parish and abbey church. A new church was consecrated on 22 September 1956. Subsequently, the Convention oriented more to the lifestyle and the Constitutions of the Congregation Beuronese, 1982, the abbey Varensell was inducted into the Beuronese Congregation.

Presence

The Sisters of Varensell operate a book and art dealer, a vestment workshop, a bakery and a host farm; also courses, retreats and times of retreat are offered in the "House of St. Benedict ." On religious life interested women can check their calling in the " monastery on time."
