Varian Associates

Varian Associates was an electronics company founded in California in 1948. She was one of the first high-tech firms of Silicon Valley. In 1999, she split into three companies: Varian Inc. ( scientific instruments ), Varian Medical Systems (Palo Alto) and Varian Semiconductor.

The company was founded in San Carlos ( California ) by Sigurd Varian Fergus, his brother Russell Harrison Varian, Edward Ginzton, William Webster Hansen 1948. Participation was also Fred Salisbury, Myrl Stearns, Dorothy Varian ( the wife of Russell Varian), physicist Leonard ship from Stanford University and the lawyer Richard M. Leonard. The Supervisory Board also sat David Packard of Hewlett -Packard, another early Silicon Valley company.

In 1953 they moved to Palo Alto, the first company in the Stanford Industrical Park. After Sigurd Varian died in 1961 took over the post of CEO Ginzton, and under his leadership, the company stabilized financially. In the early 1990s they had about 1 billion dollars in sales.

The company began to produce klystrons for radar. Other electromagnetic technology was added, particularly in the field NMR and EPR - they had among others, fundamental patents of Felix Bloch.
