The stained squirrel ( Sciurus variegatoides ) is a Central American mammal in the order of rodents ( Rodentia ). It belongs to the family of squirrels ( Sciuridae ).

Features

Sciurus variegatoides is a large tree squirrel with a long tail. The fourteen sub-species have a high variability in color and pattern. Thus, the tint of the dorsal fur from almost black, through red-brown, yellow-gray vary to white. With a head-body length of 22-34 cm and a tail length of 23-33 centimeters, the stained squirrel is slightly larger than the squirrel. The weight is 428-909 grams.

Habitat and Distribution

The stained squirrel inhabits both dry and moist forests of Central America and Mexico.

Way of life

Stained croissants are solitary arboreal animals. They build their nests usually in forks of tall trees. They are diurnal with a peak of activity in the early morning.
