Vārkava Municipality

Vecvārkava (also Upmala ) is a village in the east of Latvia, on the banks of Dubna.

History

The place was built during the Soviet era at the former estate Warkow the center of a collective farm. Today there is a school, medical center and an information point for tourists. Worth seeing are a nature trail, the former manor house and the Catholic Church.

  • Here the embryologist Aleksandrs Kovaļevskis (1840-1901) was born.

Vārkavas novads

The place is the center and the namesake of the county of the same name ( Vārkavas novads ), which was formed from three municipalities in 2009. ( See also: Administrative divisions of Latvia ) The administrative building is located in Vecsvārkava. 2010 were reported in 2369 inhabitants. The largest towns are Vecvārkava, Vanagi, Rimicāni, Arendole and Piliškas.
