Varna Airport ( IATA code VAR, ICAO code LBWN, Bulg Летище Варна, Letishte Varna) is a Bulgarian airport 10 km west of Varna. He is followed by the airports of Sofia and Burgas the busiest airport in Bulgaria and is managed by Fraport.

History

The first mail plane landed in 1919 in Varna Tichana, but worked the line for one month only. It was not until 1947, the air traffic was resumed, with the line Sofia - Varna. In the first year, 23 passengers were transported to a total of six flights. On 9 May 1948, the new airport was opened in Varna, but in 1961 he received a 2500 meters long 24-26 centimeter thick concrete runway and a landing light system.

A new airport terminal came into operation in 1972, it housed the administration, the technical department, the settlement of domestic and international flights. Due to the increased traffic and larger aircraft to improve the asphalt surface was necessary, the thickness of the runway in 1974 increased.
