Varrese Painter

The Varrese Painter was an Apulian vase painter. His works are dated to the middle of the 4th century BC.

The Varrese Painter got his Notnamen after hypogeum in Canosa where you found some of the painted vases of him. He is now able to almost 200 vases are allocated, it is considered in the research as one of the most important vase painters of his time. He influenced the artists, not only in its environment but also far beyond his own work time up to the precursors of the Darius Painter. A quarter of the assigned vessels, including hydriai, Nestoriden, Lutrophoren and a large Oinochoe, is of considerable size. The rest of his work is for a good part of bell craters and Peliken. The repertoire of images is characterized by recurring motifs. Four basic motifs have been identified:
