Vasile Iorga

Vasile Iorga ( born February 19, 1945 in Măraşu, Circle Brăila ) is a former Romanian wrestler. He was winner of a bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and Vice World Champion and European vice-champion in free style at middleweight.

Career

Vasile Iorga began as a teenager in Brăila with the rings, where he became a member of the Sport Club CS Progresul Brăila. He focused on the free style and was coached by Alexandru Tătaru. He had reached in 1968, the Romanian top class. He was inducted into this year in Bucharest in an international match against the Federal Republic of Germany and defeated it in the welterweight Reinhard Zeiher on points.

In 1969 Vasile Iorga also the first time at an international championship. At the European Championships in Sofia he missed with a 4th place in the middleweight barely a medal. 1970 Vasile Iorga was staying with the Romanian National Team on Ringer Länderkampf travel in Germany and defeated while Peter Neumair from Hallbergmoos, Adolf Seger from Freiburg and Lothar dunks from Efferen. In the following years he won nine international championships medals. His greatest success was about winning the Olympic bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich at middleweight. He wrestled a draw against the eventual Olympic champion Levan Tediaschwili from the USSR, but lost to the American John Peterson ( wrestler).

In 1973, Vasile Iorga became vice world champion at middleweight in Tehran. He only lost in the final against the Soviets Vasily Sjulschin. Against the strong wrestler Yosuke Nagano from Japan and Ismail Abilow from Bulgaria he had won this championship. Another runner-up title Vasile Iorga won the European Championship 1975 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Here he won inter alia about Günter Spindler from the GDR and Henryk Mazur from Poland, but lost the final against Ismail Abilow.

A major success celebrated Vasile Iorga also at the European Championships in 1970 in East Berlin, where he finished 3rd in the middleweight division. But he succeeded at this event a sensational victory over Olympic champion and world champion Lewin Tediaschwili. His last start at an international championship contested Vasile Iorga at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. He was defeated there, but after two victories against weaker opponents against Soviet wrestler Viktor Nowoschilow and against Ismail Abilow and thus came in the final result only on the 9th Place.

Vasile Iorga was a frequent starter during his career. He participated in many international tournaments unusual and won them a lot. Vasile Iorga was member of the military, but worked after his playing days as a trainer in Brăila. From 1990 to 1992 he was also President of the Sport Club CS Progresul Brăila. Now he is retired.
