Vasilis Michaelides

Vasilis Michaelides, Vassilis Michaelides also (* 1850 in Leukonoikon, † December 18, 1917 in Limassol), was a Cypriot poet and painter.

Michaelides is the preeminent poet of Cyprus. His works were written in Greek Cypriot dialect. He was born around 1850 in the village Leukonoikon near Famagusta. Michaelides studied icon painting in Nicosia and Larnaca.

1873 published his first poems, " The Zinswucherei " and " swallows and owls ." Michaelides 1875 traveled to Italy to continue his painting studies in Naples. Three years later he returned to Cyprus and worked for the newspaper "truth" in Famagusta. In 1882 he published his first collection of poems entitled " The Sick Lyra ". From 1884 he worked as a volunteer nurse in the hospital of Famagusta. In 1888 he published the satirical journal " Diabolos ". 1893 Works produced " Anerada ", " Chiotin " and his most famous poem, " July 9, 1821 ". In 1911 he published a volume of poems, simply titled "Poems ". Four years later he wrote the work " vision of Romäers ".

Michaelides suffered for many years from alcoholism and died totally impoverished.
