Vasilyevo, Zelenodolsky District, Republic of Tatarstan

Wassiljewo (Russian and Tatar Васильево ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Tatarstan (Russia) with 16,953 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located just over 25 kilometers in a straight line west of the center of the Republic capital Kazan on the left bank of the Volga River, at the upper end of the dynamic range of the Kuibyshev Reservoir. The place is situated on an island formed from narrow sidearm Karassicha, which today is, however, largely silted or marshy.

Wassiljewo belongs to Rajon Selenodolsk and is just 10 kilometers east of the administrative center Selenodolsk.

History

The village Wassiljewo was founded in the 17th century and received in 1928 the status of an urban-type settlement.

Culture and sights

Reached near the right bank of the Volga towards Wassiljewo and in summer from there by ship is on an island the former, founded in 1551 under Ivan IV during the last war against the Khanate of Kazan as a basis for the decisive attack Swijaschsk city. In the present-day village (since 1932) a larger number of buildings is the 16th to receive the early 20th century. The place is one of the most important tourist destinations in Tatarstan, a candidate since 1998 for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A few kilometers north of Wassiljewo extends the 5921 -acre northern sector of the biosphere reserve established in 1960 and Sapowedniks Volga - Kama .. on whose territory is located on the Raifa Lake ( Raifskoje Lake), also founded in the 17th century, in the 1930s closed in 1991 and re-opened russian Orthodox Raifa - Virgin - Birth Monastery ( Раифский Богородицкий монастырь / Raifski - Bogorodizki monastyr ), the most important monastery of the Eparchy of Kazan and Tatarstan.

In the pine forests on the banks of the Volga in Wassiljewo are several sanatoria, for example, Vasilevsky and Sosnovy Bor, as well as a hotel and training complex of the basketball clubs UNICS Kazan.

Since 1996, a memorial museum for the painter Konstantin Vasilyev exists.

Economy and infrastructure

In Wassiljewo there is a glass factory farms and forestry.

The settlement is located on the railway line Moscow - Kazan - Yekaterinburg ( station at kilometer 768 and multiple breakpoints ). There is a suburban train services to Kazan. North takes you past the old route of the M7 highway from Moscow to Kazan to Ufa at the place, in the course of the Volga River is crossed at Selenodolsk of a car ferry. The new route crosses the river on a bridge about ten kilometers downstream ( east ) of Wassiljewo.
