Vasylkiv

Vasylkiv (Ukrainian Васильків, Russian Васильков / Vassilkov ) is a town in the Ukraine in the Kiev Oblast with about 39,700 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2004 ), about 30 kilometers southwest of Kiev. The city is on a river Stuhna ( Стугна ) and is the center of Rajons same name.

History

A settlement existed at the site of the city from time immemorial. A fortress was here 988 created on the orders of Vladimir the Great, to protect Kiev from the south. The fortress and the city were named after the Christian name of Vladimir Vassilev.

1796 Vasylkiv received city rights.
