Vatheia

Vathia (Greek Βάθεια ) is located at the southern tip of the Mani Peninsula in the Peloponnese, a 33 inhabitants large village in the Greek prefecture of Laconia. Vathia is located at about 200 meters altitude on the highway between Areopoli and Cape Tenaro. Administratively Vathia belongs to the district of the municipality Itylo Anatoliki Mani headquartered in Gythio.

The place is first mentioned in sources from the 16th century, but the present building dates back to the 18th century. At this time the place had 300 inhabitants, agricultural operated on the surrounding inhospitable country or kept cattle. In the early 20th century, the city lost one of its meaning, so that in 1979 just eleven citizens permanently living there. The discontinued but very original preserved village was restored in 1980 with the help of the Greek Tourism Board EOT, where many of the old houses have been converted into guest houses.

The place Vathia usually consists of sparsely populated residential towers, the fortress- like focus on the top of a cliff near the Messinian Gulf. Some residential towers are used as holiday homes. The picturesque location of the place is also an attraction for tourists.
