The Vatican Heliport (Latin Portus Helicopterorum ) is the helipad of the Vatican City.

History

Pope Paul VI. 1978 gave the order to build the heliport to the Pope and the Vatican City state visitors to carry, without impeding the flow of traffic. The Pope will be flown during the summer months of this heliport from the around 25 km away papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo on Lake Albano and can supervise his duties at the Vatican City on a regular basis through this connection also. It always came back to long, lasting up to a few hours roadblocks if the Pope by automobile through Rome went to Castel Gandolfo. This caused trouble in the Roman population.

As a patron of heliports a copper image of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa was built at the heliport.

Location

The heliport is located in the southwest of the Vatican City, on the westernmost bastion ( bastions Paolo VI) of the Vatican wall, otherwise it borders on the Vatican Gardens. It is used to link the Vatican to the international airports Ciampino and Fiumicino airports.
