Vatnsnes

Geographical location

The Vatnsnes Peninsula is located in the north of Iceland. It is bounded by the fjord Miðfjörður and Húnaflói Bay. On the peninsula there are mountains that rise up to over 1000 meters. The peninsula is part of the municipality of Hunathing vestra.

It is on an unpaved road circling the mountainous peninsula. The small town Hvammstangi with his seal Museum is located on it. At the top of Vatnsnes lies the abandoned farm Hindisvík. The corresponding small bay is known for its large seal colony. One finds there both the ringed seal and the seal congregations.

If you drive inland from the Bay Húnaflói again, one arrives soon for about 15 meters high basalt rock Hvítserkur.

From this side of the bay you can look across to the Skagi Peninsula over the lagoon Hóp, near which the city is located Blönduós.

Before that one sees on a peninsula in Hóp the small black church of Þingeyrar where once stood the oldest monastery of Iceland.
