Vatnsoyrar

Vatnsoyrar [ vatnsɔiɹaɹ ] on the island of Vágar is the only place in the Faroe Islands, which is not located by the sea. For this, it is the largest lake of the Faroe Islands, the Sørvágsvatn.

Vatnsoyrar was founded in 1921 and is one of the youngest places in the archipelago. The Royal Air Force used during the British occupation of the Faroe Islands in World War II as the Sørvagsvatn natural airfield for seaplanes, while built immediately to the west of the lake of Vágar airport.

In Vatnsoyrar there is a small car museum ( Vatnsoyra Bilasavn ), including a Ford T from 1915 and a Ford TT truck from 1922. The TT- vices were in 1922 the first cars in the Faroe Islands at all.

In addition, there is a factory for doors and windows ( Vatnsoyra Snikkaravirki ).

The municipality plans since 2006, a significant expansion of the town with 25 new plots, so that the population would more than double.
