Vauxhall A-Type

The Vauxhall Type A is a passenger car, the Vauxhall produced from 1908 to 1915. A single piece was manufactured in 1920. This was the first series-production Vauxhall, which was designed by Laurence Pomeroy, and the car was in those days the most popular 3 -liter cars in the UK. On 26 October 1910 he passed the first 20 hp car at Brooklands, the 160 km / h

Lawrence Pomeroy was in 1907 came at the age of 22 years as an assistant draftsman to Vauxhall. He first attracted attention in June 1908 when RAC and Scottish Reliability Trial. His first design, the Y1, had outstanding success at the 2,000 - mile race. He showed excellent climbing characteristics, where he was presented to all competitors at the uphill 37 seconds and also at Brooklands until then achieved unprecedented speeds. The Vauxhall was so fast that he could finish (74 km / h) in each class the 200- mile distance with an average speed of 46 mph because the car could (88 km / h) run fast up to 55 mph. The type Y won the Class E in this race.

The type Y was such a success that they decided to take him as a type A09 in series production. So the guy came A.

There were four different versions, which were built between the start of series production on 27 October 1908 and the setting of the model 1914. A final type A was still 1920.

The A09 and the A11 were further developments of the type X with the engine of the type Y and a four-speed gearbox basically. Some early type A had, however, the three-speed transmission of type X. At least 70 of the first type A also had the oil sump of sheet copper, which was used in the engines of the type X. The A12 had a heavily revised chassis, and for the 16/20 chassis and engine were again revised significantly.

The Type A had a 3.0 l - sv- block engine with forced lubrication. Camshaft and magneto were driven at A09, A11 and A12 of spur gears, while the 16/20 had a timing chain.

The Vauxhall Type A was up to 160 km / h and was one of the most famous 3-liter cars of its time. He collected many speed records and was known for its reliability at high speed. More advanced technology from these models are also found in the Prince Henry and in a 30 /98.

Of the 950 cars produced survived to this day not even two dozen.
