Vaxholm

Vaxholm is the capital of the Swedish municipality of the same name. The town with 4857 inhabitants ( 2010) situated in the Stockholm County or the historical province Uppland.

Vaxholm is on Vaxön, an island in the archipelago near Stockholm, and is a popular destination of Stockholm, as here, cross the ferry most of the Stockholm archipelago area and there are bus connections from Stockholm. Besides the mostly commercially operated ferries there is also the free ferry to the neighboring island of Trafikverkets Rindö.

History

Vaxholm is one of 134 Swedish cities with the historical city status.

The main attraction is the castle, which was built to guard the seaward side of Stockholm. The first fortification was built in the reign of Gustav Vasa. Its present form was the fort in the 19th century.
