VDL Groep

The VDL Groep, based in Eindhoven is a Dutch industrial group. It owns 79 subsidiaries in 16 countries with over 7,100 employees.

Besides her work in machine and plant engineering as well as suppliers in the fields of metal processing, plastics processing, surface treatment, Mechatronic systems and system supply the VDL Groep is primarily known as a manufacturer of buses.

History

In 1953, Pieter van der Leegte founded in Eindhoven operation for metal processing. From the initials of his name, the company name was VDL. Through numerous acquisitions his son Wim van der Leegte the company could significantly increase since 1979.

VDL Bus & Coach

The VDL Bus & Coach Division comprises the bus operations of the VDL Groep, which began with the acquisition of a majority stake in the bus division of DAF in 1993.

Berkhof, a Dutch manufacturer of travel and buses, since 1998, is a part of the VDL. Back in 1992, took over Berkhof the minibus manufacturer Kusters. In 1994 the ailing Belgian Jonckheere bus producer.

Since 2003, the Dutch coach manufacturers Bova is one of VDL.

With the introduction of VDL Citea bus line, a further development of the Berkhof Ambassador, and the coach VDL Futura, the successor to the Bova Futura, now the unified brand VDL replaces the traditional manufacturer name.

Indicators

In the year 2010 925 buses, 535 coaches, 243 chassis and 232 midi and mini buses were sold. VDL was with a market share of 4.7 percent in sixth place in Western Europe. The main markets are France, the Benelux countries, Germany and the UK.
