Vecchiano

Vecchiano is a municipality with 12.341 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 67 km ². It is located about 70 km west of Florence, and 8 km north of Pisa. The place is situated on the river Serchio.

The districts include Avane, Filettole, Migliarino Pisano and Nodica.

The neighboring municipalities are Lucca ( LU), Massa Rosa ( LU ), San Giuliano Terme and Viareggio ( LU).

History

In the resort traces of human habitation have been found by the Etruscans. First mentioned was the place in the 8th century. Since the 10th century it was assumed under the influence of Lucca. Due to its strategic location on the border of Pisa and Lucca Vecchiano was soon taken out of Pisa, who built the castle church Chiesa di Santa Maria in Castello. From the 13th to the 15th century, the church and its districts several times the scene of hostilities between Pisa and Lucca, and was also attacked by the Duchy of Milan. With the defeat of Pisa also Vecchiano 1406 managed under Florentine rule.
