Vechte

Lower reaches of the river Vecht in Dalfsen (Netherlands)

The Vecht ( Vecht in the Netherlands or Overijsselse Vecht ) is a 182 km long, extending from the Munsterlander lowlands on the sandy lowlands around Nordhorn to the IJsselmeer in the Netherlands river, which is expected to flow of the Rhine.

River

The Vecht rises on the outskirts of Darfeld (municipality Rosendahl ) in Western Munsterland in a small karst spring at the northern foot of the tree mountains. After about four kilometers of the Darfelder Vechte from the right greater by about half Rockelsche mill creek flows to. According to an administrative court approval decision from the year 1962 made after another two and a half kilometers of the confluence with the significantly less water leading than the Vecht Burloer Bach in Eggerode (municipality Schöppingen ) as the real beginning ( "Origin " ) is called the Vecht.

In Welbergen flows from the right Gauxbach, and the Vecht turns in a northeasterly direction to betting rings. Together with the leading- bit later, at least equivalent to Steinfurter Aa she breaks through 20 to 40 meters rising Saale glacial moraines of Rheinermark heights and reached shortly thereafter Lower Saxony. In Schüttorf their lowland limits the west ridge rising Bentheim, a Sandsteinzug in continuation of the Teutoburg Forest. Due partly swampy sand plains it passes to Nordhorn and after New house where flowing into it as the largest tributary of the German spelled. A few kilometers to the northwest it passes near the confluence of the Lee Hoogstede, then rings and Emlichheim. Here the Vecht turns west. She has been here a water flow of 18 m³ / s achieved and overcome a fall of 96 meters above sea level to the state border.

After the river has crossed the German - Dutch border in Laar at a height of nine meters above the sea, he called Overijsselse Vecht and flows in a southwesterly and westerly direction on Hardenberg and Ommen to Dalfsen. Below Ommen her flowing from left, as the largest tributary of the Regge to leading more than eight cubic meters of water per second. North-east of Zwolle pivots a river on the northern flow direction of herkommenden of Zwolle Zwarte Water. This broad watercourse then retains its name, but is actually a tributary of the much larger Vecht.

River system and water data

The information on the catchment area and water levels in the river Vecht vary greatly because the data partly relate to the river course in the narrow, nominative sense, to the confluence with the Zwarte Water, and partly on the location of the barrage at Ramspol that the lake-like expansion Zwarte sea from Ketelmeer, a side waters of the IJsselmeer, separates. In a narrower sense, the catchment area of 3780 km ²; for the area in the broad sense ranging information of 5741 km ² to 6,300 km ². The average discharge at the mouth of the IJsselmeer is specified with approximately 50 m³ / s, which is somewhat too low appears, given the area drains to the surrounding level, are the fairly consistent 10 to 11 l / s.km ² and computationally closer to 60 m³ / s. At the confluence of the Vecht with the Zwarte Water arise mathematically around 40 m³ / s

History

Boat trip on the river Vecht

The Vecht played a significant role for the shipping until well into the 19th century. Since the rainfall -dependent flow into the summer months a little water, the water level was at times very low. The design of the boats, so-called Zompen was adapted to it. About the Vecht Bentheim sandstone was mainly transported to Zwolle. In order to shorten the journey time to Zwolle, the New Vecht was created in 1600. Middle of the 19th century were the channel Dedemsvaart and the branch Lutterhoofdwijk is produced, this is the distance from Coevorden shortened to Zwolle, and the Vecht lost its importance as a transport route. With the opening of Overijsselse Kanaal 1858, the commercial shipping ended up on the Vecht.

Between 1898 and 1908, the Vecht was channeled and cut off many river bends. This decreased the water level, which is why from 1920 to regulate seven locks and dams were built ( De Haandrik, Ane ( removed), Hardenberg, Diffelen, Junne, Vilsteren, Dalfsen ). The Vecht is today from its mouth near Zwolle until after Junne above Ommen navigable for vessels of up to one meter depth.
