Veenendaal

Veenendaal ( listen? / I ) is a city and a municipality in the Netherlands, Utrecht.

Location and economic

Veenendaal is between Amersfoort and a few kilometers eastern Ede, on the A12 motorway (Utrecht - Arnhem). It has two stations on the railway line Utrecht Rhenen. The industrial areas to the north of the city are located near the train station Veenendaal de Klomp - on the railway line Amsterdam - Arnhem. This has been significantly upgraded with the annual schedule in 2008, since then keep it there half-hourly InterCity trains.

On the southern edge of the city, the forest area Utrecht Ridge, which is suitable for hiking and is attracting many tourists.

History

Veenendaal was built in the 16th century as a Torfstecherdorf in peat bog in the south of the " Geldersche Vallei " on the border between the diocese of Utrecht and the duchy of Guelders. Along the Torfkanals Grift and its side channels, the first houses were built. In the 18th century flourished the house weaving and the cultivation of tobacco. Veenendaal was from about 1870 to 1970 a major industrial city. There were producing for a textiles, especially wool - Scheepjeswol ( Schiffchenwolle ), for yourself and for knitting socks plugs, and 3 Suisses were well-known brands of Veenendaal - and on the other cigars. Both sectors were subject to foreign competition. The last cigar factory, Ritmeester, closed its doors in January 2005.
