Veeravalli S. Varadarajan

VS Varadarajan ( Veeravalli Varadarajan Seshadri; * 1937 in Bangalore ) is an Indian- American mathematician.

Life

Varadarajan studied at the University of Madras (then Presidential College) with a bachelor 's degree in 1957 and in 1959 at the Indian Statistical Institute in CR Rao PhD ( Convergence of Stochastic Processes). After that, he was at the University of Washington in Seattle and 1968 at the Institute for Advanced Study, before he went to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA ), where he became a professor.

Initially he worked on probability theory and statistics, but changed after an encounter with Harish - Chandra 1960, whose close friend and pupil he was, to the theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras and their representations with applications in quantum mechanics. In addition, he also wrote some well-known textbooks. Later he dealt among other things with meromorphic differential equations (along with Donald Babbitt ) and supersymmetry, super Lie groups and homogeneous spaces supersymmetric.

In 1998 he was awarded the Lars Onsager - Medal of the University of Trondheim. In 1968/69 he was a Sloan Fellow and he became an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva in 1992. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.

He was the editor of the Collected Essays of Harish - Chandra (1984).
