Vega is a Norwegian island municipality in the Helgeland region, Fylke Nordland. The municipality borders on Brønnøy, Vevelstad and Alstahaug.

Geography

In addition to the main island of Vega and the islands Ylvingen and Omnøy are inhabited. Other islands are inter alia Lånan and Skogsholmen. The south of the island of Vega is dominated by about 700 m high mountain Vegtindan, the north on the other hand of a moorland. The islands Hysvær and Sola are part of the conservation area Hysvær / Sola. A second area, the nature reserve Eidemsliene, was proposed in 1911 as worthy of protection.

Economy

The main economic activities are agriculture, fisheries and local services. There is also partly fish processing in the community.

History

The oldest settlements on Vega dated 10,000 years back to the Stone Age. It is the oldest documented settlement in northern Norway. Presumably, the fish-rich waters have worried about the islands that the people settled there.

The Vega archipelago of 6500 islands, islets is on the list of UNESCO world heritage since 2004.

Culture

The community participates in the Artscape Nordland with the sculpture "En ny samtale ( New Conversation ) " by the Finnish artist Kain Tapper part.
