Veglie

Veglie ( Eie in Salento dialect ) is a Southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 14,319 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. Veglie located 20 kilometers west of Lecce and about 12 kilometers east of the Gulf of Taranto and the Ionian Sea. Veglie located in the Salento level.

History

Veglie was founded at the beginning of the 10th century. However, a grave was found in 1957 from the time of settlement by the Messapians from the 3rd century BC.

In the region around Veglie olives and vines are grown. The nearest railway station is located in Salice Salentino on the railway line from Martina Franca to Lecce.
