Vehicle registration plates of India
Since 1989, the license plate in India a consistent structure:
- Two letters that stand for the state,
- Two digits ( a leading zero may be omitted ), which specify a so-called RTO office, each of which covers a district in some states, in other states but can also have quite arbitrary areas of responsibility and
- A letter (not used in all states ) and one to four digits in the serial part.

Unlike many other states Motorcycles bear bottom, and front license plate; many vehicles also have that on the sides.
The colors of the signs have a meaning:
- Black letters on a yellow background - commercially used vehicles and vehicles of public transport ( including taxis )
- Black letters on a white background - private and federal vehicles
- White text on black background - mainly private vehicles
- White letters on a red / blue background - police (not in general)
This classification is usually respected, but there are exceptions.
Government vehicles are in the upper part of the plate a red background with white is the function of the holder on, for example, " Govt of Gujarat " or " High Court ".
Until 1989, passed the mark of a combination of
- Two or three letters, which indicated the first two the state and the third encoded either the district or the vehicle type, but already could belong to series, part and
- Up to four digits, which always belonged to the series part.
