Vehicle registration plates of the European Union

The Euro plate, license plate with official European Union identification, was introduced in the European Union, to show the solidarity of the EU member states. It has a blue ribbon at the left edge of the license plate. Above are the twelve yellow stars of the European flag and below displayed in uppercase country code. The color of the country code is usually white, in some countries (eg the back of the UK ) also yellow.

History

As early as 1988 it was decided in Luxembourg to display the European flag in the left part of the number plate.

Introduction to the EU

The decision to impose the EU flag was adopted by the European Commission in autumn 1998. The EU Commission has been guided in the design of 1991, in Portugal in 1992 and in Germany introduced in Ireland in 1994 EU labels and adopted it as a standard.

The standard design of the EU symbol consists of a blue strip on the left side of the license plate, lie above the twelve stars of the European flag and below the distinguishing sign. The color scheme of the blue stripe and stars are based on the European flag, the letters of the nationality mark shall be white or yellow. In France, Great Britain, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, the yellow and white letters are used. A two-line number plates the blue ribbon is usually before the top line, but there are also variants with the blue tape from the bottom line, for example, in Belgium.

In the UK, Finland and Denmark since 2009 in the Euro- symbol is optional and not mandatory.

In Belgium, the EU flag is issued to all new registrations since 16 November 2010.

In Austria there is the plate with the standardized European Union identification since 1 November 2002. Already but previously stickers were already sold with the EU label to stick on number plate in addition they can. While this was illegal, but was tolerated in Germany.

Croatia is expected to introduce the Euro plate mid-2014. Even before joining in 2013 appeared occasionally unofficial, glued Euro - bar on the left margin.

Non -EU countries

Various non -EU countries have introduced similar features, use this, however, usually has its own icon instead of the European flag on country designation. Some of the new EU members, such as Poland and Lithuania had introduced prior to their accession to the EU temporarily EU -like mark with national flag, but have used since their entry form with the EU stars.

Even before the accession to the EU in 2004, Malta had introduced the Euro plate in 1995.
