History

After 1439 began here with the exposure of sheep to take possession of the island of São Jorge, 1460 Velas place was built. It received city rights in 1500 by King Manuel I and was raised to Vila. In the 17th century it was the fortress of Santa Cruz. On 9 July 1757 the island experienced a strong earthquake, which claimed many victims and caused major damage.
