The castle Veldenz, also called Nohfelden castle, situated on a mountain spur in place Nohfelden in the district of St. Wendel in the northern Saarland.

History

The spur castle is first mentioned in 1285. Its builder, Wilhelm II Bossel from stone that came from Oberstein on the Nahe, had the Earl of Veldenz concede in the opening act of the law at his castle. After the extinction of the family of the stone, the castle passed to the Counts of Veldenz.

Middle of the 15th century acquired the Dukes of Pfalz- Zweibrücken castle and manor Nohfelden. Until the French Revolution the castle was the seat of a Zweibrücker bailiff. In 1490, the castle witnessed one of the saddest chapters in the history of the Palatinate- Zweibrücken. After the death of Duke Ludwig the Black Kaspar and his sons Alexander had one years reigned together when Alexander was allowed to settle by force his older brother. He was taken to the castle Veldenz and stayed there - even after the death of his brother - until his death in 1527 in captivity.

In the many wars of the 17th century, the castle did not remain unmolested, but was kept always serviced. Died in 1661 at the castle Duke Frederick. 1804, the castle was declared a French national property and sold to the brothers Cetto from St. Wendel. Then fell the castle which is now used for the procurement of construction materials.

Owner of the castle ruins is the community Nohfelden.

Plant

Presence is still the 21 -meter-high circular keep of the castle. The grounds of the castle extends over a length of 100 meters. The basement of the Palas is accessible again since 1971. He was about 30 meters long and 12 meters wide. On the remaining area of ​​the castle are now houses. Meanwhile, the tower has a roof again.
