Vele di Scampia
The complex Vele di Scampia ( The Sails of Scampia ) is one of the most important buildings of social housing in Italy.
History and Concept
In Scampia, a northern suburb of Naples, the seven buildings were built by the architect Franz Di Salvo 1962-1975. Three of them were demolished between 1997 and 2003. The charakterischte shape of the towers reminiscent of sails ( vele ), hence the nickname of the building. In its design, the building is significantly influenced by the so-called Unité d' Habitation by the Swiss architect Le Corbusier. In building a variety of functions should be provided that permits the residents a life as a residential community.
Today, the buildings are in extremely poor condition. Although the buildings are still inhabited, but are a problem district and drug transshipment point.
