Velian Hill

The Velia (rarely also in the plural Veliae ) was an early populated hill in Rome, who came north-east of the Palatine hill, and this combined with the Oppius. In the older settlement history of the Velia was one of the seven hills of Rome, which were distinguished in connection with the Roman festival Septimontium in December. Later the ridge by the imperial buildings almost completely leveled was ( more ablations were performed under Benito Mussolini ) and was not included among the seven hills of Rome. The exact extent of the area known as Velia is not clear.

On the Velia sanctuaries and settlements were established early. Formerly there were in the temple of Jupiter Stator and the shrine ( aedes ) of the Penates. Are preserved remains of built on the highest point of the Temple of Venus and Roma, the Via Sacra and the Arch of Titus. In addition to the Velia, the Basilica of Maxentius was built on a large artificial terrace.
