Velutinidae

Onchidiopsis glacialis, dorsal view

The Velutinidae are a family of marine snails exclusively, found in warm, temperate and cold seas almost worldwide. They feed on sea squirts.

Features

The mostly small, ear -shaped housing are right wound and have a short, low thread. The most broadly ovate, large estuary occupies the largest part of the base. The screws have a blunt head and thread-like sensor, the eyes behind their base increases. The radula of Volutiniden wearing a mid-terrace three rows of teeth and posterior teeth. The foot has the front edge on each side of a protruding corner.

The case is more or less completely covered by very thick coat hem. In some species (eg Velutina velutina ) can the screw all the way back into the house, while others (eg Marsenina stearnsii ) the house can be shown by the screw at least by a slit at the back is extended, while in others ( eg some types of Lamellaria ) the coat is grown over the house.

The snails are small to medium in size. As far as known by the various types, carried out the development of a plankton -feeding veliger larva.

Way of life

The Velutinidae live in tidal areas up to several hundred meters water depth. The main distribution is in shallow water. They live together with sea squirts, from which they mainly feed on and lay their egg capsules in their empty -eaten shells.

System

The Velutinidae family after the revision of the taxonomy of the worm by Bouchet and Rocroi (2005) divided into two subfamilies:

  • Subfamily Velutininae JE Gray, 1840 - Synonyms: Marseniidae Leach in Gray, 1847; Marsenininae Odhner, 1913; Capulacmaeinae Golikov & Gulbin, 1990; Onchidiopsinae Golikov & Gulbin, 1990 ( N. A. ); Marseniopsidae Badel, 1993 ( N. A. )
  • Subfamily Lamellariinae AD d' Orbigny, 1841 - Synonyms: Coriocellidae Troschel, 1848; Sacculidae Thiele, 1929 ( inv ); Pseudosacculidae Kuroda, 1933
