Vemod (Swedish for ' melancholy ') is the debut album by the Swedish progressive rock band anecdotes. It appeared in 1993 at the band's own label Virtalevy.

Creation and publication

After its beginnings as a King Crimson cover band took anecdotes 1991 and 1992 each have a demo with original music on. These pieces were played again in the spring of 1993 for the debut album. Guest musicians Per Wiberg and Pär Ekström participated. For the Japanese version of 1995, a bonus track was recorded. This also appeared in 2011 in a limited edition, remastered LP edition.

Anecdotes play on Vemod of King Crimson -influenced retro prog with mellotron, powerful bass and often dissonant guitars. Also similarities to Änglagårds hubris can be seen. Occasionally, piano, flugelhorn, cornet and cello are used. There you will find quiet and rocky passages. Both Liljeström and Dahlberg come as a singer used. The album's title is programmatic because the mood is mostly dark and melancholic.

Reception

The album was recorded mostly positive and stressed the Sweden's role as a major center of the emerging in the early 1990s retro prog. Rachel Worksop Wondrous Stories from the magazine criticized Vemod Although predominantly as boring and poorly produced. However, Udo Gerhards praises of the Baby Blue Pages, the enthusiasm and dynamism of the album and Paul Collins of Allmusic it finds compelling and promising. The eclipsed magazine took Vemod on its list of the 150 most important prog albums.
