Architectural History

The current appearance of the station is a result of a series of designs which have been created since 1924 by the architect Angiolo Mazzoni and by a competition of 1934. Winner of the competition was Virgilio Vallot ( 1901-1982 ). Both architects worked closely together in the execution of the station, especially the reception building and the hall, in the years from 1936 to 1943. The construction was continued after the war under the direction of architect Paolo Perilli and completed in 1952.
