Venice is a district in western Los Angeles, is known for its recreated Venice canals, the beach life in Venice Beach and some artistic activities. Venice is located between Santa Monica to the north, Mar Vista on the east and Marina del Rey in the south.

History

The " Venice of America " was written by Abbot Kinney (1850-1920), a native of New Jersey cigarette manufacturer founded in 1905 as a seaside resort with Italian-inspired channels. In 1911, the city gained its independence from the neighboring city of Santa Monica. Since Venice was easily reachable by tram the Pacific Electric Railway from the nearby metropolis of Los Angeles, it soon became a popular attraction. With the introduction of Prohibition in 1920, but fell off the main source of income of the young city, and in subsequent years, the channels for incorrect Entertainment began to fall again. In November 1925, the inhabitants, therefore, to join the city of Los Angeles decided. The incorporation entered into force in 1926. Even today, however, in favor of some residents the independence of Venice. Most channels were back in 1929 again filled in and replaced by roads. Between 1930 and 1980, oil was promoted in the place.

In the following decades, Los Angeles did not do much to support the resort, which is now one of its numerous suburbs. Thus began, for example, lapsing the waterfront. At the same time also decreased rents, so that in the postwar period, many artists, but also attracted survivors of the Holocaust to Venice. At the beginning of the 60's parts of the bank building and other streets were strong redevelopment ripe. 550 houses, including at the central Windward Avenue, has subsequently been demolished on the orders of the city.

The remaining channels were long maintained only slightly over half a century. In the years 1992 and 1993 they were finally restored thoroughly and partly created from scratch. As early as 1982 found the canals of Venice inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places of the United States.
