Verbania

Verbania is a city of 30,310 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Piedmont region of Italy. Since 1992 she has been the capital of the dissolved out of the province of Novara province of Verbano- Cusio -Ossola.

Geography

The city lies at an altitude of 197 m above sea level on the western shore of Lake Maggiore. It extends over an area of ​​37 km ².

History

It was created in 1939 by the union of the towns of Intra and Pallanza.

The name of the district comes from the intra geographical position between the two streams ( in Latin intra flumina ) San Giovanni ( north ) and San Bernardino ( south ).

The massacre from Lake Maggiore murdered members of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler in October 1943 in the district of intra Italian Jews Ovazza Ettore and his whole family and burned the bodies in the boiler room of the school. On 20 June 1944 massacres members of the SS 43 partisans in the district Fondotoce. In memory of those who were murdered there in Fondotoce a park of remembrance, the Parco della Memoria e della Pace. There is a memory center, the Casa della Resistenza di Fondotoce in him.

Attractions

The botanical gardens of Villa Taranto is for the most part on the headland of Punta della Castagnola that separates intra Pallanza.
