Verdicchio

Verdicchio is a white grape variety of central Italy. The grape probably originated from the Trebbiano Greco family and has been known since the time of the Etruscans in Italy. The bestockte surface is approximately 4000 hectares. Plantings are known in the regions of Marche, Umbria and Abruzzo as well as on the island of Sardinia. We recommend its cultivation in the provinces of Ancona, Ascoli Piceno, Pesaro, Macerata, Perugia, Terni, Rome, Viterbo and L' Aquila. Approved is the cultivation beyond in the provinces of Pistoia, Rieti, Pescara, Teramo, Cagliari, Nuoro, Oristano and Sassari. Unmixed grown arising from their wines with a strong aroma of peach and apple, sometimes immature fruit.

Since the 14th century a white wine of the same name is vinified in the Verdicchio dei Castelli DOC areas di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica almost exclusively from this grape variety in the brands. In the areas esino, Bianco dei Colli Maceratesi, Falerio dei Colli Ascolani and Lacrima di Morro d' Alba is a white wine is also grown with at least 50 % Verdicchio share.

Due to its high overall natural acidity originated from Verdicchio one of the first sparkling wines of Italy.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is strong hairy white wool, with pinkish approach. The young leaves are hairy slightly woolly and yellowish- green color.
  • The leaves are indented three to five lobes and deep. The petiole is lyres -shaped open. The edge of the blade is serrated pointed. The teeth are set closely compared the vine.
  • The drum-shaped grape is medium to large, shouldered and dichtbeerig. The roundish berries are medium to large in size.

The grape ripens about 30 days after Chasselas and is thus regarded as late maturing. The variety is grown strong, but has a weak and uneven income. The variety is due to their Dichtbeerigkeit susceptible to the raw rot.
